1. Essence and working principle of the instrument
Automotive battery tester is a professional equipment used to evaluate the performance status of batteries. It measures the battery's voltage, internal resistance, cold start current (CCA) and other parameters to determine its capacity, health and charge and discharge performance. The core principles include:
Voltage detection: Measure static voltage (when not started) and dynamic voltage (at the moment of starting) to determine the remaining power;
Internal resistance test: Internal resistance is measured by AC impedance method. An increase in internal resistance usually means aging of the plates or attenuation of the electrolyte;
Load test: Simulate a high current load (hundreds of amperes) during start-up and test the voltage stability of the battery under load.
2. Core role and application scenarios
1. Battery health assessment
Capacity attenuation detection:
Measure the actual capacity of the battery (for example, if the actual capacity of a nominal 60Ah battery is less than 80%) and determine whether it needs to be replaced (it is generally recommended to replace it when the capacity is less than 70%);
Case: After a vehicle battery was used for 3 years, the detector showed that the capacity dropped from 60Ah to 42Ah (70%), and the voltage dropped sharply from 12.6V to 9.5V at start-up, indicating that the battery is aging.
Diagnosis of abnormal internal resistance:
The internal resistance is inversely proportional to the health (for example, the internal resistance of a new battery is about 2-3mΩ, which may rise to more than 10mΩ after aging). Excessive internal resistance indicates that the plate is cured or the electrolyte is dry.
2. Start performance prediction
Cold Start Current (CCA) Test:
Test the instantaneous discharge capacity of the battery at-18 ℃ (such as a battery with a nominal CCA500A, whether the measured value reaches more than 450A), and predict the reliability of starting in winter;
For high-frequency vehicles such as taxis and logistics vehicles, regular CCA testing can avoid breakdowns caused by weak starting.
Start-up voltage stability:
If the voltage during starting is lower than 9.5V (12V system), it may cause the starter to be weak or the ECU to be powered off. The detector can record the voltage curve at the moment of starting to locate the voltage dip problem.
3. Charging system troubleshooting
Generator charging test:
After starting the engine, check the charging voltage (normal 13.5-14.5V). If the voltage is lower than 13V or higher than 15V, it will indicate that the generator or voltage regulator has failed;
Case: The battery light on the vehicle dashboard is always on, and the detector displays the charging voltage of 12.8V. It is determined that the generator belt is slipping or the stator winding is damaged.
Sleep current detection:
Measure the static current (normally <50mA) after the vehicle is turned off. If the current is too large (such as 200mA), it will indicate that there is leakage in the electrical system (such as the trunk light is not turned off or leakage of equipment is installed).
4. Battery maintenance and life extension
Charge and discharge management:
After charging the loss-of-electricity battery (voltage <12V), use a tester to evaluate the charging efficiency (such as the capacity returns to more than 90% after charging, it is normal);
AGM batteries for start-stop system vehicles need to regularly test the internal resistance and capacity to avoid shortening their life due to deep discharge.
Balancing charging assistance:
For multi-battery parallel systems (such as double batteries for motorhomes and trucks), check the consistency of each battery to avoid overall performance degradation due to aging of a single battery.
5. Commercial vehicles and special scenario applications
Heavy trucks and construction machinery:
Inspect the consistency of the 24V system battery pack (two 12V batteries in series) to avoid starting failure caused by a single battery failure (such as mine truck and crane starting systems);
New energy vehicle low-voltage battery:
Inspect the status of the 12V low-voltage battery (used for on-board electrical appliances) of electric vehicles to avoid the failure to start the high-voltage system (such as Tesla and BYD models) due to power loss in the low-voltage battery.
3.Usage process and precautions
Test preparation:
The vehicle is turned off for more than 10 minutes to ensure that the battery is in a static state;
Connect the positive and negative electrode clips of the detector (red to positive electrode, black to negative electrode) to avoid damaging the instrument through reverse connection.
Operation steps:
Select the corresponding battery type (ordinary lead acid, AGM, EFB);
Start the load test, observe the voltage, internal resistance, and CCA data, and obtain the health percentage (such as displaying "Good" and "Replace").
Safety and Maintenance:
Keep away from fire sources during testing to avoid leakage of battery electrolyte (acidic liquids need to be neutralized with baking soda);
Charge the tester promptly after use, and calibrate the internal resistance measurement module regularly (recommended once a year).
